CPL John F. HEIBERGER
Ryan Ia. – The body of T/5 Cpl. John F. Heiberger of Ryan and the first Delaware County soldier to lose his life in World War II, is being returned to Ryan from Tunisia, North Africa, for burial.
Upon its arrival a memorial service will be held at St. Patrick’s Church at Ryan with burial in Calvary Cemetery near there.

Gravestone Inscription: Iowa Tec 5 899 Tank Destroyer Bn WW II
The 899th landed in North Africa on January 26, 1943. The Battalion's baptism of fire was at El Guettar, Tunisia, on March 23, 1943 when they encountered the German 10th Panzer Division.
