Warren Lawman Hintz, 88, of Ventura died May 23, 2001, after a lengthy illness. Hintz was born Jan. 30, 1913, in Manchester, Iowa. His parents were Louis Hintz and Frances Lawman Hintz. He graduated from Manchester High School and attended Iowa State University. He enlisted in the Iowa National Guard while residing in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1937. He rose to the rank of brigade sergeant major after his unit was called to active duty in 1940. He was commissioned as a lieutenant of artillery in 1943. He participated in the invasions of Guam in 1944 and Iwo Jima in 1945. He served with field artillery units in combat during the Korean War. He retired from active duty in 1965 as a lieutenant colonel. He moved to Ventura in 2000, after having lived since 1965 in San Diego. Hintz was awarded numerous personal and unit decorations, including the Military Order of St. Barbara, the highest award of the Corps of Artillery. Hintz was married to Elinor Ruth Eby of Des Moines in 1943 in Savanna, Ga. Their son, Steven Eric Hintz, was born in 1947 in Minneapolis, Minn. Hintz is survived by his wife, Elinor of Ventura; son, Steven; grandchildren, James Michael Daniel Hintz and Catherine Anne Elizabeth Hintz, all of Ventura; and sister, Mary Louise Hintz Darton of New Bern, N.C. At his request, no services will be held. His ashes will be interred at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers or other memorials, contributions be made in the name of Warren L. Hintz to the California State Railroad Museum Foundation, Sacramento, CA 95814.
