Death of Rufus Millett

The Press learns with regret of the death, at Lamont, of one of its old and valued friends, Rufus Millett, one of the pioneer citizens of this section. We have known Mr. Millett from boyhood. He was a good man and true, kind, upright, generous and faithful to every duty, and we esteem it a privilege to have known him. We take the following sketch of his life from the Lamont Leader:

"Rufus, the youngest and only remaining so of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Millett, was born in Jo Davis county, Ill., June 4, 1849, and passed away at his home near Lamont, Monday evening, April 30, 1923, after a long and lingering sickness, at the age of 73 years, 10 months, and 26 days. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1853 and located on a farm about three miles east of Lamont, where he continued to live until the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Julia E. Becker on September 4th, 1889, and to this union four children were born: Mrs. Minnie Kotek of Portage, Wiconsin, Laura G., Eunice F., and Clifford R. of Lamont. Mr. Millett was united with the Methodist church in 1895 and was a reular attendant as long as his health permitted. He was a devoted husband, a kind father and a good neighbor. To his chlidren (sic) he leaves a heritage better than wealth--a character above reproach. 'A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver or gold.' He leaves to mourn his departure a devoted companion, four chldren, two grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon. Interment was made in the Campton cemetery."
