A SAD BEREAVEMENT – Mr. Jas. C. Stoughton, an employee of the Herald office, residing on 3d street hill, suffered a sad bereavement in the sudden death of his wife, Saturday afternoon at a little past 3 o’clock. Wednesday morning last Mrs. Stoughton had been safely delivered of a fine healthy boy, and appeared to be doing well enough afterward, though she had taken a severe cold previous to the birth of the child. Friday her symptoms began to grow worse, and she sank rapidly until the time she died, of congestion of the lungs. Mrs. Stoughton’s maiden name was Jennie Andrews; she was the daughter of a farmer, and was born at Linn Grove, Linn Co., Iowa, Nov. 22, 1849. She resided in different portions of Linn county, and was married to Mr. Stoughton at Central City, in Linn county, May 25th, 1869. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Stoughton removed to Maquoketa, Jackson county, where he worked in the Excelsior office for a year, at the end of which time he came to Dubuque and found employment in the Times office, but was afterward employed on the Herald, where he has remained until the present time. Mrs. Stoughton’s father and mother resides at Spring Grove, Linn county; a brother and sister are in Manchester, and a brother in Maquoketa. In character she was a woman of good sense, charitable in her opinions, thoughtful for the welfare of others, and a kind and affectionate wife. She never made a public confession of her faith, though her belief leaned toward the Baptist creed. Her good works and blameless life are a testament of her morality. She leaves many friends to regret her sudden death, and will be a comforting assurance to the bereaved husband to know that she was worthy of such esteem. Mr. Stoughton has the heartfelt sympathy of his fellow craftsmen in this city in his sore affliction. One of the relatives of the family, Mr. Seamen, of Manchester, arrived on the train last night. The remains will be taken to Manchester for burial on Monday. – Dubuque Herald, Sunday, Nov. 5th.
