Joseph A. Bauer, 92-year-old Paul resident died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at the home of his son in Boise.

He was born Feb. 14, 1909, in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of Anthony Joseph and Mary Borghorst Bauer. He attended schools in Dyersville, Iowa, and moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where he attended grade school. At the age of 15, Joe moved to Blackfoot. He worked with his dad in the blacksmith shop and later worked road construction with Wheeler and England Construction Company for a number of years. He met and married Zelma Wheeler and they soon moved to Paul. They were later divorced. He was an avid aviator having achieved his private pilot's license and subsequently receiving his instrument and commercial ratings. At the age of 60, Joe received an acrobatic rating. He married Virginia Alexander Critchfield on Dec. 4, 1963, in Las Vegas, Nev. She preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1995. Joe was a blacksmith and welder having worked with the manufacturing and repair of farm equipment. He was a member of the BPOE of Burley, past president of the Paul Lions Club, past president of the Paul Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Flying B Resort Ranch, and was Grand Marshall of the Paul Parade. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, target shooting competition and had a master rating of indoor shooting and an expert rating in Big Bore. Survivors include a son Mark D. Mary Bauer of Boise; one brother, James Bauer of Leslie, Idaho; two sisters, Hazel Clark of Blackfoot and Bernita Grady of Lindon Center, Vt.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a son, Bruce M. Bauer; a sister, May Louise; two brothers, Loren A. Bauer and Harold Bauer and a grandson, Kelley D. Bauer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the Paul LDS Stake Center, 424 W. Ellis in Paul, with Bishop Dee Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in the Paul Cemetery. Friends may call at the Payne Mortuary in Burley on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and at the church from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral on Saturday.
