11 April 1935

A sense of profound shock pervaded this community last Saturday, April 6, 1935, when it was learned that Mrs. S. R. ("Ross") Young, whose husband spent the formative years of his life here, had been instantly killed early that morning when the automobile in which she and her husband were riding upset near Kokomo, Ind. after striking a patch of pavement made slippery by rain. Mr. Young, whose home is in Cincinnati, O., and who has been for several years a traveling representative of the Duplex Printing Press company, was on his way to keep a business appointment, Mrs. Young being at the wheel of their car. Two young men, college boys who were hitch hiking, were picked up at Kokomo, the party leaving that city about 3:30 a.m. Mr. Young and one of the boys were rendered unconscious for some time after the accident occurred, but the other boy summoned help as rapidly as possible. Mrs. Young, however, was found beyond human aid.

The body of Mrs. Young was brought to Manchester for burial, and funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church on Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. James R. McInnis officiating. Interment was made in Oakland cemetery.

Elsa M., youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson of Owensville, Ind., was born there Aug. 12, 1889, and was therefore 45 years of age. On Dec. 11, 1911, she and Mr. Young were married, and to them was born a son, Daniel H. Young, jr., who was named after his paternal grandfather, one of the pioneer men of this county, and now a stalwart lad of fifteen years, a sophomore in the Western Hills high school in Cincinnati. In addition to the husband and son, Mrs. Young is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ada Mauck and Mrs. Lena Benson, both residents of Owensville. It is a sad coincidence that not long ago a sister of Mrs. Young was killed in an automobile accident, her husband dying soon after of injuries received in that fatal occurrence.

Mr. Young, who is the son of former Senator D. H. Young and Mrs. Young of this city, has been a printing craftsman since early manhood, beginning his work in that profession under his father when the latter conducted a newspaper here. Later he was for several years connected with the Mergenthaler Linotype company. His wife, although a stranger to our people at the time of their marriage, widened here acquaintance in Manchester by virtue of frequent visits to the home of Mr. Young's parents, and impressed all who met her by the vivacity, wholesomeness, and happiness of her nature. Possessed of a brave and sunny disposition, her home reflected the brightness and buoyancy which were hers in such abundance, and her death makes it desolate indeed. Mr. Young and his son need no assurance from us that they have the heartfelt sympathy of friends in the old home town, friends who deeply sense the sorrow and loneliness which have come as a blight upon their lives. Another mystery is added to the long chain of inexplicable event with which this life is crowded, a mystery to be solved only when our dull eyes open upon that land where "the crooked shall be made straight and the rough places plain."
