Funeral services for Herbert S. Smith, 88, of Manchester were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 1997 at the Clifton Funeral Home, Earlville, with burial in the Fairview Cemetery, Earlville. Mr. Smith died Friday, June 20, 1997 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. Born March 28, 1909 in Coffins Grove Township near Manchester, Herbert was the son of Oscar and Elizabeth (Marschall) Smith. On October 10, 1933, he was united in marriage with Ina Mae Cocking at the Cocking family home west of Manchester. Together they ran the Smith Apple Orchard and he worked for Collins in Cedar Rapids and Henderson's in Manchester for brief periods.
Ina died in 1980. In 1983 he married Elva Rood, who also preceded him in death in 1990. He was a founding member of the Delaware County Historical Society 59ers, and a member of the Delaware County Extension Service/Farm Bureau and the Masonville Grange. He also ran a sawmill in the 20`s sawing all of the lumber for the CCC projects in the area.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wives; and three sisters, Helen Smith, Alma Wilson and Virginia Corll. Memorials are preferred to the Delaware County Historical Society. Clifton Funeral Home, Earlville, was in charge of the arrangements.
