Thursday, May 26, l92lJOHN A. GEETING was born in l834 in Boonsboro, Md., and departed this life at his home in Decatur, May l9th, l92l, being over eighty-seven years of age at the time of his death. From his birth place in Maryland he moved to Ohio with his parents and then came with them to Forreston, Illinois, and then to Decatur County in l870. He was united in marriage to ELEANOR J. GASCON at Albany, Illinois, Nov. l8, l869. To this union was born one son, C.A. GEETING, of Spencer, Iowa, and one daughter who died in infancy. MR. GEETING was a Civil War Veteran serving with the 34th Illinois Vol. Inft., from l86l to l865. His record as a soldier is well known to his comrades. He was an exemplary citizen, popular with all and ever ready to help those in need. For some years he followed farming but had been living the life of a retired farmer for a number of years, making his home in the town of Decatur.
He was always ready to assist with any movement that meant better living and better lives among the people of the nation and in his own community. He was one of the county's well known and influential citizens. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, May 2lst, at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Comyn, Pastor of the Decatur M.E. Church, conducting the services. A large number of his friends attended the funeral.
