AMASA J. DAVIS, son of WILLIAM and PHOEBE DAVIS, was born at Atwater, Ohio, March 22, l827. In the spring of l837, his father moved the family to Indiana, five miles from White pigeon, Michigan. In l848 the entire DAVIS family in company with O.N. KELLOG's family, came by wagon to Iowa and located at Garden Grove on October l2. The subject of this sketch was at that time twenty-one years of age.
He received his education at the seminary in Ontario, Indiana, and throughout his lifetime kept himself informed upon the questions of the times and intelligently stood for progress and better environments for his fellowmen. He had three brothers and three sisters; ENOS, MARY, SETH, MARTHA, EDWARD and SYNTHA, all having preceded him in death. His mother died when he was six years of age.

In l853 he entered land from the Government, west of Garden Grove, and for fifty-seven years he held the title in fee simple to this land, it being known widely as the A.J. DAVIS farm. Truly he was a pioneer worthy of the esteem and gratitude that we, who have entered into the inheritance and enjoyed the comforts and luxuries of the pioneers, give altogether too little thought and consideration for what their toil and privations have brought to us. He wrought well and faithfully his part in the growth and development of his adopted state of which he was a loyal citizen.

July 9, l855, at White Pigeon, Michigan, he was united in marriage to MISS CLARA OSBORN, and came directly to the farm in Decatur County where they resided until l898, when they retired from their toil and removed to Weldon. The wife and mother died February 28, l902. To them were born eight children, four sons and four daughters; BART, of Leroy, Iowa; MRS. MINA E. DANIEL and MRS. HATTIE REYNOLDS, of Stapleton, Nebraska; MRS. FANNY CAGE, of Denver, Colorado; FRED W. DAVIS, of Helena, Oklahoma; ALBERT and KITTY DAVIS, of Weldon, Iowa, and WILLIAM H. DAVIS, Bozeman, Montana. All the children are living and present at the obsequies except MRS. CAGE. Father DAVIS' parents were Quakers and he gave his allegiance to Christ and united with the Christian Church at Weldon, and through the years of his life was a sturdy supporter of the principles of Christian integrity and patriotic citizenship.

He was a true and loyal husband, a loving and devoted father to his children, having their best interests and welfare at heart as long as he lived. His life is an unfading inheritance to the children and will be a precious memory to them. He scarcely knew sickness, either himself or in his family, and maintained unusual health until shortly before he died. He passed away at his home in Weldon, Sunday evening, March l3, l92l, at the advanced age of 93 years, ll months and 2l days.
