Decatur County Journal
Thursday, February l7, l92lALLEN W. SPARGUR was born in Highland County, Ohio, August 26th, l838. He was the son of JOSEPH and NANCY M. SPARGUR, and was one of a family of fourteen children. One brother and one sister survive him. He was the father of eleven children, five of whom are still living, three sons and two daughters, MRS. W.A. HENDERSON, of Greybull, Wyoming; MRS. F.E. KIRK, of Monte Vista, Colo.; C.W. SPARGUR, of Rosita, Colo.; and CHARLEY W. SPARGUR, of Sterling, Colorado and HENRY W. SPARGUR, of near Davis City, Iowa.
MR. SPARGUR, in company with a number of other families, left Ohio and came to Iowa in March, l870. ALLEN settled first near Villisca, and stayed there about a year, then he came to Decatur County and settled in the vicinity of Woodland. He lived near there for many years, but part of the time he was in the edge of Wayne County, then moved back into Decatur County and has owned different places and lived in different parts of Decatur County for many years. About one year ago he moved into Davis City where he died on February llth, l92l, aged 82 years, four months and l5 days. His occupation during his lifetime, and until the decrepencies of old age settled on him, was that of a farmer. He leaves to mourn his departure his aged wife, who is in poor health and feeble, three sons and two daughters and a host of relatives and friends.
A short religious service was held at the home by the writer hereof and the remains were taken to the Hamilton Cemetery near Pleasanton and buried near friends who had preceded him to the great beyond. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of all the neighbors and acquaintances. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia. Thus, one by one, the old land marks are fading away. Peace to his ashes.
