Thursday, November 4, l920

ETTA L. BRIGHT, daughter of HENRY and LORENA BRIGHT, was born near Leon, Decatur County, November 25, l868. Her girlhood days were spent in the parental home, in and around Leon, where she attended school and graduated from the Leon High School. When at the age of twenty years she decided to give her life in the care and keeping of her Savior, and joined membership in the M.E. Church.

In l895 she went to Chicago, Ill., where she was employed as a stenographer, a form of occupation which she enjoyed and in which she was exceptionally competent. In February, l897, she was united in holy marriage to MR. ALEXANDER SPENCE, of Chicago, and for eight years they lived very happily together. Then MR. SPENCE was taken ill and died. This was a sad occurrence to MRS. SPENCE, but with true Christian fortitude she planted her faith more firmly in the providence of God, and with a brave heart she again assumed her occupation, being employed in the law offices of Bailey & Webster until the time of her sickness.

She suffered nine months with Bright's disease, and died October 29th, l920, at her apartments in Chicago, at the age of 5l years, ll months and 29 days. Her decease occurred on the day of her husband's birthday. She was a member of the Eastern Star and this Order carried on very beautiful and appropriate services in Chicago. The Chapter of Leon assisted in the obsequies of the day. She leaves to mourn her loss her father and one sister, besides a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at the father's home on Commercial Street, Tuesday afternoon, November 2nd, conducted by Rev. Jervis. Many beautiful large floral offerings were presented by the friends from Chicago, the local Order and family and friends here. The interment was made in the Leon Cemetery.
