Thursday, February 26, l920SARAH SCOTT SMITH was born near Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, January l3, l829. She was the oldest daughter of ROBERT and NANCY SMITH. At the age of sixteen, she moved with her parents to Indiana and in l864 came to Iowa and has been a resident of Decatur County for fifty-six years. On December l8, l849, she was married to JOHN JONES. To this union were born nine children. She also was the mother of four step-children, all of whom preceded her in death with the exception of one step-daughter, MRS. MARGARET WION, of near Lamoni, Iowa, and one son, JOHN M. JONES, of Davis City, Iowa, and also four daughters, MRS. J.H. PAYTON, of Kellerton; MRS. F.O. SPURRIER, of Scott's Bluff, Nebraska; MRS. C.R. BOEGER, of Davis City; and MRS. L.C. BROOKS, of near Lamoni, Iowa; also eighteen grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren, one aged brother, WM. H. SMITH, of Henry County, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews are left to mourn their loss.
She became a member of the Methodist Church when quite young and always tried to live a Christian life. She died February l7, l920, at the home of her daughter, MRS. L.C. BROOKS, at the advanced age of ninety-one years, one month and four days, having lived a widow nearly thirty-seven years. Interment was made by the side of her husband in the old cemetery at Davis City. Services were held in the chapel of the Church of Christ at Davis City, conducted by W.R. Manchester, a neighbor for many years, assisted by Wm. J. Campbell, an Evangelist of the Church of Christ at Davis City.
