Thursday, February l6, l922VERN E. KIER, fourth son of SAMUEL and MARTHA KIER, was born near Decatur City, Iowa, Oct. l2th, l877, and departed this life at his home in Grand River on February l0, l922, being at the time of his death, 44 years, 3 months and 29 days.
On the l8th day of March, l906, he was married to MARY E. SEARS of the same vicinity and to this union was born one daughter, MILDRED LAVERNE. About nine years ago he was converted and was baptized by Evangelist Ronk and lived and died in the Christian Faith. He grew to manhood on his father's farm. Farming being his chosen profession which he followed until failing health four years ago, compelled him to seek other employment. He then engaged in the mercantile business at Grand River in which business he was still engaged at the time of his death. He was an efficient and successful business man. He was always interested in the things that were for the betterment of the community.
No word of praise is too great to express the esteem in which he was held by his neighbors and large circle of friends. During his long illness his suffering was intense, but he bore it with remarkable patience. Besides his faithful wife and daughter, the deceased leaves four brothers, HENRY ALL, of near Decatur City; CLAUDE M., of Shenandoah; ANDREW J., of Silver City, and DON G., of Davis City and five sisters, NELLIE M. PHIPPS, of Adrian, Missouri; ANNA C. CREES, of Decatur, Iowa; DELIA S. CREES and INE E. HARGER, of Grand River, and LENA O. ROBBINS, of Davis City, and a number of other relatives and a host of friends to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband, a loving father and brother.
