Decatur County Journal
Thursday, November 6, l9l9

After an illness of three years' duration, T.L. TULLIS passed away at his home in east Mount Ayr, Sunday, October 26. MR. TULLIS came to Mt. Ayr in l888 and from that time until a few years ago, was engaged in the livery business. For many years he carried the mail on the star route between Mount Ayr and Benton and enjoyed a wide acquaintance. He was a man of kindly disposition, generous in his dealings with his fellow men and always cheerful and happy.

The funeral was held from the home Monday afternoon, conducted by S.P. Williamson, Pastor of the Church of Christ, assisted by Rev. Frank Bean, Pastor of the Methodist Church. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Clyde Lesan, Mrs. Earle K. Allyn, Mr. A.B. Liggett and Dr. D.R. Dudley, the accompaniments being played by Mrs. George S. Allyn. The service was largely attended by neighbors and friends, members of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which he was a member. The body was laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery, the committal services being conducted by the Odd Fellows Lodge.

THOMAS LOUIS TULLIS was born in Columbia County, Ohio, on the twenty-fourth of October, l847, and died at his home in Mount Ayr, October the twenty-sixth, l9l9, at the ripe age of 72 years and 2 days. He had suffered for three years from dropsy but only in the last three weeks was he seriously ill and bedfast.

As a young man he came to Decatur, Iowa, in l872, and after sixteen years in this county he moved to Ringgold County, where the remainder of his days were spent.

He was married to LYDIE ENGLE in l870, while living in Ohio. To this union were born two children, RENE GREY and HARVEY, both of whom live in this community. MRS. TULLIS preceded her husband to the great beyond in l892, after twenty years of married life.

On the twenty-fourth of June, l89l, he was married to MELVINA SMITH and lived happily in this union till his death. Five children were born to them: GLEN A., who is with the army of occupation in Germany; CARYL and WILL, who live at home; LUCILE, who died in infancy, and MARY LUELLA.

As a young man, he enlisted in Company I, 9lst Ohio Infantry and served his country for nine months in the Civil War, receiving an honorable discharge in August, l865. He was one of the youngest of the rapidly thinning ranks of the nation's oldest veterans.

In l876, he became an Odd Fellow and the presence of his brethren here today shows the respect he was held in the Lodge. To mourn their loss, he leaves his sorrowing wife and six children as well as a large number of relatives and friends.
