Our community was surprised and shocked at the sudden and unexpected death of one of Leon's most highly esteemed citizens, CLIFTON A. BROWN, which occurred Wednesday morning, October 22nd, l9l9, at 3:l5 a.m., at his home in the northwest part of town. His illness, ending in death, was of short duration and was caused by complications ending in heart failure. Arrangements were completed to go Wednesday morning to the hospital at Creston, Iowa, for counsel and treatment.

He was born at Hiram, Portage Co., Ohio, August l4th, l853; departed this life after a brief illness October 22, l9l9; age 66 years, 2 months and 8 days. His early life was spent on the farm near Hiram, Ohio. When a young man, the family moved to Eureka, Illinois, where he attended college. He came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Bloomington Township, Decatur County, in the spring of l875. He was united in marriage to MISS CLARISSA A. MCDOWELL in Bloomington Township, December 9, l875. To this union were born eight children, three sons and five daughters. One son preceded the father to the spirit world, having departed this life August 3lst, l9l0. The children who survive the father are as follows: MINNIE B. BROWN, eldest daughter at home; MRS. HELEN E. RHODES, Lamoni, Iowa; HORACE L. and ROY D. BROWN, Kellerton, Iowa; MRS. MYRTLE B. ANDREW, Grand River, Iowa; MISS HAZEL D. and MISS TEMPLE G. BROWN, at home.

He and family moved from the farm and came to town in the fall of l9l3, where he resided until called by death to his Heavenly home. He united with the Church of Christ in Eureka, Ill., at the age of seventeen years. His faith in Christ as his Savior has been a sweet benediction to him through all the years. He was an affectionate father, a loving devoted husband, a true friend, a good neighbor, highly respected and honored as an upright, loyal citizen. He leaves to mourn his departure the loving wife, children, seventeen grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. The bereaved ones have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their sore affliction.

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by P.H. Green, Pastor of the Church of Christ. Favorite hymns were sung by Mrs. J.T. and Mrs. Clay Harris, pianist, Mrs. Bert Woodard. The pall bearers were neighbors and friends and were as follows: C. Brazelton, Wm. Biggs, J. Springer, G. Wallace, D.A. Buell and A.M. Pryor.
