Death of Mrs. Sanger
Esther M. Thomas was born in Monroe County, New York, December 11, 1819, and died at her home near Leon, Iowa, April 12, 1911, at the age of 91 years, 4 months, and 1 day.
She was the eldest daughter of James [and] Catherine Thomas and when 24 years old came with them to Lake County, Indiana, where she made her home for a number of years. On April 6, 1848, she was united in marriage Leander W. Sanger who died November 12, 1881. To this union five children were born as follows: Marcus R. of Washington, Kansas; A.W., who died January 31, 1900; Leander w., of Oregon; Mrs. Esther Stewart and Geo. W., of Leon. There are also 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. To all these she was fondly attached, often remembering them with letters of comfort and cheer, though herself was lying on a bed of pain. Three of her children were present at her last sickness and death. For almost eight years she had been confined to her bed, yet uncomplainingly, and ever thoughtful of those who ministered to her wants. She was raised among the Friends (Commonly called Quakers) and firmly believed in the goodness and righteousness of these people of whom she often spoke words of praise and commendation. She was a devoted mother, and her life was spent for the happiness of her family and comfort of her friends.
In 1870, the family moved to Decatur County, Iowa, where she made her home the remainder of her life.
Funeral serviced were conducted at the residence of James Stewart, two miles northeast of Leon, Friday afternoon by Elder J.S. Coffin, of the Christian Church. The remains were laid to rest in the Leon Cemetery.
"Life, we have been long together
Though pleasant and through cloudy weather.
'Tis hard to part when friends are dear;
Perhaps 'twill cost a sigh, a tear;
Then steal away, give little warning;
chose thine own time.
Say not good night, but in some brighter clime,
Bid me good morning."~ Newspaper clipping from unknown newspaper, but likely from the paper in either Garden Grove or Leon. Clipping from Zana (Curry) McKibben's collection (likely saved by her mother, judging by the date of the paper). Transcribed by Tracie 4/4/2024 ~
