Elisha C. Mayhew was born December 25, 1831, at Shelbyville, Indiana, and died at Lamoni, Iowa, September 12, 1918, at the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 18 days. One brother and three sisters survive him.
His father, Royal Mayhew, filled two terms as state treasurer at Indianapolis, where they moved in 1846.
Elisha married Curney G. Francis in 1852 and one daughter was born. She is yet living also her two daughters at Indianapolis. His wife died and he crossed the plains in 1854 to Oregon and preempted land; [he] also engaged in selling goods and in other enterprises.
In 1866 he served as first sergeant in a company during Indian troubles in the State of Washington.
Early in the sixties he returned to Indiana and in 1868 at La Porte married Anna M. Mayhew. To them were born five children, two of whom are dead and three living. These are Mrs. Flora A. Silver, Mrs. M. Cook, and Elisha C. Mayhew, jr. Mrs. Mayhew, the mother, died in Lamoni, May 1, 1887.
Of grandchildren are, Howard M. Ralph E., and Clair T. Silver, and Laola Cook.
After his second marriage, Mr. Mayhew lived near Versailles, Indiana, on a farm until 1881 when the family removed to Lamoni and has continued here in various kinds of businesses. While living in Indiana his house was a home for the ministry of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ appointed to that State and he was baptized on June 7, 1876, by Elder Columbus Scott, and he held to that faith to the end.
His children say that he was one of the most affectionate of fathers, always considerate for their feelings and the feelings of others.
His last illness was from indigestion and seemed slight and no serious result was anticipated, but on Friday evening at 9:30 o'clock, when Mrs. Silver came in from shopping downtown she found her father lying upon the floor dead. Apparently, he died of sudden heart failure and it did not appear that he had suffered pain. His features were calm as if in sleep.
Funeral services were held on Monday in charge Elder John Smith, assisted by Heman C. Smith who offered prayer at the residence and the church. Sermon by H. A. Stebbins. Prayer at the grave by John Smith.
