In 1941, the family moved from Ft. Madison, Iowa, to a farm located southwest of Lamoni in the Evergreen neighborhood where they lived until Will's death in April 1962. Later that year she moved to the home in Lamoni she occupied until a short time her death.

In July 1967, she was badly injured in a car-truck accident near Cameron, Missouri, and was left with one eye severely damaged as well as some injuries to her back. In spite of all this, she lived alone in her home until she was over 93 years of age and crocheted rugs, pillows, and over 70 afghans for her family. Over the years she did many kinds of handiwork.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Carrie Jane Grotts; three brothers: Brierley John, Pearl Franklin, and David Ralph Stevenson and her companion, William H. Thomas.

Additional survivors include fourteen children, twenty-five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
