Howard Maxwell Silver was born on September 24, 1889, the firstborn of Joseph T. and Flora Silver of Lamoni, Iowa. He died January 14, 1981, at Lamoni at the age of 91 years.

He married Fern Eleanor DeSart in 1918. He served in the Army, 33rd Division, in France in 1918 where he earned the Silver Star medal.

After the armistice, Howard and Fern homesteaded a one-half section of open rangeland in Montana. For 5 years they lived in a sod house during the summer months which they and their neighbors built.

Howard and Fern operated a café in Lamoni for several years. Howard spent two years in CC camp service, Winterset, then in Belle Plaine. In his middle years, Howard worked at Silver and Roberts Standard station in Lamoni and also worked as a custodian at the Lamoni State Bank.

Close family mourning Howard’s death are son, Donald W. Silver and wife, Vivian of Boone, Iowa; son, Max E. Silver, and son Lyle R. Silver and wife, Lois, all of Seattle, Washington; brother, Ralph E. Silver of Lamoni; brother Clair T. Silver and wife, Nell, of Austin, Texas, 6 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held January 17, 1981, at 2 p.m. at the Slade Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with Elders Joe De Barthe and Willard Moon officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.
