MERCEDES — Dr Catherine Wilder Gates, 68, died Sunday in Independence, Mo. She was a native of Cook’s Point. Tex. She was the widow of Gene Wilder of Mercedes. She later married George D. Gates who also preceded her in death.

A former resident of Mercedes, she was a professor of psychology at Graceland College of Lamoni, Iowa, before retiring. She had taught at the University of Nebraska and Markato State College.

She was a graduate of Pan American University and held advanced degrees from the University of Texas and the University of Nebraska She was a member of the American Association of University Professors and the Association of Professional Guidance Counselors.

She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served on several world church bodies, including the Advisory Council on Women, Advisory Committee on Family Life and Zionic Development Commission.

Survivors include a son, James E. Wilder Jr of Portland, Tex, two daughters, Mrs Dorothy Romig of Bellaire, Tex, and Mrs Mary Jo Jackel of La Feria; and a sister, Mrs Mary F Salzman of San Jose, Calif. Also surviving is a stepson, George D Gates Jr of New York, N Y; a stepdaughter, Mrs Onita Christensen of San Jose, Calif.; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Weslaco. Stotler Mortuary of Mercedes is in charge of arrangements The family suggested memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Church Temple Fund in care of Auditorium, Independence, Mo.
