Decatur County Journal
Thursday, December 28, l9l6

Wednesday morning, December 20, WATSON CAIN, who had been an invalid for the past three years was delivered from his afflictions and his sufferings were changed into rest.

WATSON CAIN was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, May 20, l833. At the time of his departure he was 83 years and 7 months old. MR. CAIN came to Iowa in l895. He came directly to Decatur County, and has lived in the vicinity of Leon ever since. His last days were spent at the home of MRS. VERN HULL, a grandniece whom he had raised.

MR. CAIN was married to MISS JULIA ALDREDGE in l855, who preceded him across the river of death January l0, l9l2. Two children were born to this union, both of whom are living, namely, JAMES CAIN, of Grand River, Iowa, and WILLIAM HENRY CAIN, of Ina, New Mexico. To his memory and credit it is to be noted that he raised besides his own two sons, four other children who found the comforts of home and the counsel and guidance of parentage in one whose heart was open to the needs of the orphans.

WATSON CAIN was not a member of any church. He, however, was a firm believer in the teachings and the promises of the Word of God, and in his daily life he sought to practice and keep the same. He served three years in the Civil War, and was one of the defenders of the flag who marched with Sherman to the sea. He served his country faithfully and well. He now rests in peace, and by all the lovers of our country he will be counted with those heroes of the past whose memory shall never die.

The funeral was held from the home of VERN HULL Thursday afternoon, December 2l. Rev. Moser of the Methodist Church had charge of the same. The burial followed in the Leon Cemetery.
