Decatur County Journal
Thursday, February 3, l9l6

UNCLE JACOB RHOADES, one of the prominent
pioneer residents of Decatur
County, passed away last Sunday at his home
near Lamoni. The death of
MR. RHOADES came as a great shock to his many
friends throughout the
country. He was popular with all, a good man
ever ready to extend a
helping hand to those in need. His loss will
be keenly felt by the
people of the community in which he lived.
The bereaved family have the
sincere sympathy of all.

UNCLE JACOB RHOADES, as he was known for many
years, was born in
Highland County, Ohio, February ll, l836, and
died at his home January
30, l9l6. Had he lived twelve more days he
would have celebrated his
80th birthday.

On February lst, l864, he was united in
marriage with JANE ELLEN CODER,
of the same county in Ohio. To this union
were born seven children,
three sons and four daughters. Two of these,
MISS IRA and FRANK
preceded their father to the life beyond.
The living are MRS. MAGGIE
FRYE, of Waterloo, Iowa; MISS ROSA, who lived
with her father; MRS. EVA
WILEY, of near Lineville, Iowa; CHAS. and
WILLIAM, both residing near
Lamoni.

UNCLE JACOB, with his family, came from Ohio
to Louisa County, Iowa, in
l864, where he lived until l880, then coming
to this county where he
made his home until death. He gave his life
to Christ in l887 and
united with the Adventist Church, where his
membership continued through
life. Together with the five children
already named, he leaves three
brothers, two sisters, several grandchildren
and great grandchildren,
with a host of distant relatives and sincere
friends to weep at his
parting. 'Tis true that UNCLE JACOB will be
missed from his home and by
his loved ones, but our tears are dried in
the realization that a golden
sheaf has been gathered by the Eternal reaper
and in calmness we say,
good-bye.
