Decatur County Journal
Thursday, December 9, l9l5

ARTHUR, the thirteen year old son of MR. and
MRS. A.L. TEALE, of Davis
City, broke through the ice on Grand River
Sunday afternoon and was
drowned before he could be rescued.

ARTHUR in company with WILDER OSBORNE and
LOUIS STONEBURNER, went to the
river to try the ice and get things in
readiness for the winter's
skating. ARTHUR went out on the ice while
the other two boys stood on
the bank. He had gone out but a short
distance when the ice broke with
him and he went through in a place where
there was seven feet of water.
He called to WILDER and OSBORNE to throw him
a stick which OSBORNE did.
ARTHUR got hold of the stick but in trying to
get out, pulled WILDER
into the water too. WILDER was able to get
out. ARTHUR realized his
great danger and told the other boys that he
guessed he was going to
drown and for them to summon help. HOSE
SCOTT and BUNK HAMILTON were
soon there and went into the water in an
effort to recover the body. By
this time other men were there and all
working frantically in an effort
to locate the body. Some of the rescuers had
narrow escapes
thamesleves. ANTHONY RADNICH finally located
the body and brought the
lad to the surface after he had been in the
water thirty minutes. The
funeral was held Tuesday at the M.E. Church,
conducted by Wm. Campbell
and the lad laid to rest in the I.O.O.F.
Cemetery.

The news of the lad's tragic death came as a
great shock to the
relatives and many friends of the TEALE
family in Leon and elsewhere.
The grief stricken parents have the sympathy
of all. The Davis City
Schools were dismissed on the afternoon of
the funeral and the high
school attended the services in a body.
