Decatur County Journal
March l7, l90l
After a short illness of only one week, CHARLEY, son of MR. and MRS.
T.J. STEPHENS, of two miles south of Woodland, died with pneumonia. He
took sick with what was thought to be la grippe but rapidly grew worse.
Congestion of the lungs had set in and all that parental love and
medical skill could do was done but he was beyond human aid, and on
Wednesday morning, March 6th, his spirit returned to God who gave it.
CHARLEY was 26 years, 9 months and l2 days old, and was born and raised
in Woodland Township and was loved and respected by all who knew him.
To know him was to love and honor him. He was converted when but l5
years of age at the Mt. Olive Church and has since lived a consistent
upright life and at all times was an obedient and dutiful son, a loving
brother and a loyal citizen. While CHARLEY was called away in the prime
of his life yet he has lived a life that is worthy of example and his
influence will live on forever.
Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church in Woodland Thursday at 2
o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. Willard Pond, of Milo, Iowa. He leaves
a father and mother, six sisters and one brother, together with a host
of friends and relatives, to mourn his loss. Kind friends were present
with loving sympathy, flowers and songs and followed the remains to the
last resting place in the Lentz Cemetery where he was laid to rest with
the honors of the Modern Woodmen of America together with the
Brotherhood of American Yeomen, as he was an honored member of both
orders and carried a $l,000 policy in good standing in the former order.
