Died, at Mystic, Appanoose County, Iowa, of consumption, on the 15th day of March, 1898, T. MATCHET STANLEY, in the sixty-seventh year of his age.
The subject of this sketch was born in Putnam County, Indiana, on the 7th day of September, 1831. When quite young, he moved with his parents to Illinois. Sometime after he moved to Mercer County, Missouri. He was married in Kansas to AMERICA ZIN, on the 18th day of June, 1857. To them were born six children, one of whom -- a bright young lady -- preceded the father to the spirit world some six years ago.
Brother STANLEY and family, while in Kansas, lived some years in Osawattamie, a near neighbor of old John Brown, of Harper's Ferry notoriety. He moved to Iowa and settled on a farm about two miles northeast of Decatur City in 1865, where he continued to live until his health failed, and about six years ago moved to Decatur City, where he resided until his death.
A few days before his death, being anxious to visit some friends, he and his wife went to Mystic, in Appanoose County. He died there on the 15th, as above stated. His remains were brought home and buried in the beautiful cemetery at Decatur City.
A telegram brought a son from Springfield, Mo. All the children were at the funeral except one son, who lives in Oregon. His only brother, JOHN, and two sisters also attended the funeral to say a last farewell. Brother STANLEY was converted and joined the M.E. Church a good many years ago and lived an exemplary Christian until death. The last few years of his life, because of his prostrated physical condition he was unable to attend church very much, but always manifested that true spirit of Christian charity which characterize the servants of God. Brother STANLEY was a good neighbor, a kind husband and father. In all his business transactions he was an upright, honest man.
Funeral services were held at the church in Decatur on the 17th of March. The house was well filled with old neighbors and sympathizing friends. The writer had a conversation with deceased only a few days before he died at which time he expressed a strong confidence in God, giving assurance that all was peace. We hope to meet him in a better land.
