DIED -- February 8, 1888, at the residence of JOHN W.STANLEY, in Decatur County, Iowa, and was buried on the 9th, at the Palestine Cemetery, MARY M. STANLEY, daughter of JOEL STANLEY and MRS. BETHANY STANLEY, deceased, who were early settlers in Decatur County, they having located here in 1853. JOEL STANLEY died in 1870 and MRS. BETHANY STANLEY in 1876.
MARY M. STANLEY was a dwarf both in body and mind and resided with her sister, MRS. JOHN W. STANLEY, since the death of her mother. Although feeble minded she was a good, obedient child (for child she was though aged 39 years at the time of her death). She was blessed with a very remarkable memory, she could call to mind many things and circumstances that had passed from the recollection of the family. During the last year, her health has been very poor, she appeared to be in a general decline, afflicted with some type of consumption, and her sister had often to take her on her knee and feed her like a babe.
Frequently her sufferings were very severe but she was patient and was blessed with such a sweet trust in the Saviour that when suffering, she would have most wonderfully impressive visions of the heavenly world and of the Lord Jesus standing, ready to receive her to take her home to see her dear mother and father who had gone before. Thus kindly cared for and tenderly led by the guiding hand and the prayers and instructions of her good sister, she continued until her heavenly father was pleased to take her to himself, and thus it is written that these things are hidden from the wise and prudent and revealed unto babes.
The writer attended to the funeral services at the Palestine Church, where a large number of the friends and neighbors were in attendance, who have the thanks of MR. and MRS. STANLEY for their kind assistance.
