JOHN W. STANLEY was born in Logansport, Ind., February 7, 1837, and died at his home in Leon, August 23, 1899, aged 62 years, 5 months and 16 days.
He located in this county in 1858. August 7, 1861, he enlisted in the 5th Kansas Cavalry and served until discharged in September, 1864.
March 21, 1862, he was married to MISS ELIZABETH STANLEY in Harrison County, Mo., who with two daughters survive him, two sons having preceded the father to the better world. His daughters are MRS. SHERMAN
RUMLEY and MRS. ED RUMLEY, both of Decatur Township.
Simple funeral services were held at the home by Rev. W.H. Ilsley Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Singing was furnished by Rev. J.F. Gibson and Messrs. Edwards, Vogt and Boswell. The Leon G.A.R. Post attended in a body. At the close of the services the casket was carried to the hearse and many carriages of Grand Army men and acquaintances followed it to Palestine Cemetery. Here they were met by the Decatur G.A.R. Post and the ceremonies at the grave were conducted by that fraternity.
JOHN W. STANLEY was an affectionate husband and loving father. He was a kind neighbor and a useful citizen. His wife, daughters, two brothers, one sister, and a host of sympathizing friends mourn his loss.
The deceased was a good soldier and his comrades testify to his courage and coolness on the field of battle. He was a patriotic citizen who loved his country and flag. But he has apppeared for the last time on the camp ground. He sleeps beneath the green sod of the country he fought to preserve with the grateful memories of his comrades to preserve his name among the mustered out.
