MARGARET SMITH STONE, daughter of ROBERT and
NANCY SMITH, was born near
Pittsburg, Penn., September 20, l839, and
departed this life at her home
in Leon, Iowa, February 25, l9l6, at the age
of 76 years, 5 months and 5
days. She moved with her parents to Indiana
at the age of six years
where she resided with them until she was
seventeen years of age at
which time she again moved with them to
Decatur County, Iowa, where she
resided ever since. October 25, l866, she
was united in marriage to
JOHN STONE, who departed this life, August 2,
l885. Six children were
born to this union, namely, MRS. E.J. BROWN,
of Murphy, Oregon; MRS.
M.F. SPRINGER, R.B. STONE, J.O. STONE, of
Leon, Iowa; and G.R. STONE and
MAUDE M. STONE, who preceded the mother in
death.

Besides caring for her own children she was
also a mother to two
stepsons, namely, J.W. STONE who lives near
Portland, Oregon, and A.M.
STONE who departed this life about one year
ago. Besides her own
children she leaves an aged sister, MRS.
SARAH JONES, of Davis City, a
brother, WILLIAM SMITH, of Mount Pleasant,
Iowa, twenty-one
grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and
a host of friends to mourn
her death. In her girlhood days she united
with the Methodist Church of
which she remained a faithful and consistent
member to the time of her
departure. She was a good woman, a kind
mother and a helpful neighbor.
To know her was to love her.

She has been a great sufferer for over three
years, but she bore it all
with great patience, and always had a smile
for every one. "Precious in
the sight of Jehovah is the death of his
saints." The funeral services
were conducted at the home by Rev. Moser, of
the Methodist Church, and
was assisted by Rev. G.T. Ronk, of the
Brethren Church. Her body was
laid to rest in the Shy Cemetery.
