JULIA REBECCA POLLARD, daughter of HENRY
POLLARD and OLIVA HAYWARD, was
born in Boston, Mass., July 4, l850. Her
father died when she was only
eighteen months old, and the mother carrying
out her husband's wish to
give his children greater opportunities, came
west to Illinois in l856.
Most of the time until the little girl's
thirteenth year, was spent in
and near Carlinville, Macoupin County, Ill.
In l863, JULIA, with her
mother, went to Monticello Seminary, a girl's
boarding school near St.
Louis. Here she remained until l869,
studying chiefly music, in which
she showed much ability. The years from '69
to '79 were spent as a
teacher of music in Whitehall and
Carlinville, Illinois; Ottumwa, Iowa,
Leon, where the greater part of her life has
been spent.

MISS POLLARD arrived in Leon one snowy day in
February, in l875, where
she was hospitably welcomed and taken into
the home of MR. and MRS. L.P.
SIGLER of whose household she remained a
member until she entered a home
of her own. She was married to ABLE E.
CHASE, a resident of Leon, at
the home of a girlhood friend in Carlinville,
November 7, l879, and came
back to begin housekeeping in what used to be
the old Cottage House on
Main St. Here three children, namely, MABEL,
JOSEPHINE POLLARD, and
RUTH, were born; and here in l890, the
husband and father suddenly died,
leaving the brave mother to face life alone.
Here the family resided until September l9ll,
when they removed to
Indianola, Iowa, that the daughters might
attend Simpson College.

Never quite strong after a severe illness in
l9l4, she began to fail
noticeably. Almost helpless from a stroke of
paralysis, MRS. CHASE was
taken to the home of her brother, HENRY
POLLARD, at Mendota, Illinois,
where she remained with her daughter, RUTH,
until summoned to the better
world on high, February 27, l9l6.

MRS. CHASE was faithful and most active as a
member of the Methodist
Episcopal Church for a great many years. On
leaving Leon, she
transfered her membership to the Methodist
Episcopal Church at
Indianola, of which society she was a member
at the time of her death.
Her funeral was held at the Methodist Church
in Leon, Tuesday afternoon.
The services were conducted by her Pastor,
the Rev. Charles R. Blair,
D.D., of Indianola, who was assisted by Rev.
R. Moser of the local
Methodist Church. The burial took place in
the cemetery at Leon. We
will meet her again in the morning.
