Decatur County Journal
December l4, l905

A very distressing accident occurred at the home of J. BARDWELL, who lives about one mile northwest of Pleasanton, on Friday evening December lst. MRS. BARDWELL went to the barn lot, only a short distance from the house, to turn the cows into the lot, leaving her two little girls, aged two and three years in the house. The youngest child got paper and lighted it in the stove and in playing with it her clothing caught on fire. The mother heard the child's screams and ran into the house and met her just outside the door enveloped in flames. Her clothing was nearly all burned off and the mother tore off the remaining and wrapping
her up, and went to the nearest neighbors for assistance. Dr. Macy was summoned by the parents but all his efforts to save the life of the
little one proved in vain. Her little spirit took its flight Saturday morning about 4 o'clock.

Her remains were taken to Mercer, Mo., Saturday afternoon to the home of MRS. BARDWELL's parents and were laid to rest in the cemetery at that
place on Sunday, December 3rd. The sorrowing family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
