OBITUARY - THOMAS JOHNSON.
Decatur County Journal
April 27, l899
The people of Leon were greatly shocked last Thursday morning on hearing
that THOMAS JOHNSON, brother of JIMMY JOHNSON, one of our oldest
citizens, had been found dead in an outbuilding by his wife. Although
MR. JOHNSON had been in poor health for years, his sudden death was
unexpected, and was a terrific blow to his relatives. He had made
several trips to Chicago to place himself under the care of skilled
specialists, but received but little benefit. On last Thursday morning
he arose as usual and shortly afterwards lit his pipe and went out into
the yard. His prolonged absence caused MRS. JOHNSON to become uneasy
and she went in search of him, finding him dead as above stated. The
cause of death is not known, but it is thought that an old throat
trouble came upon him and together with a sudden attack of heart
failure, caused his death.
THOMAS JOHNSON was born in County Norfolk, England, in l836, where he
lived many years, afterwards going to London where he was employed as a
building engineer and inspector for near twenty-four years, a position
in which his ability won for him a well deserved reputation. He came to
America, accompanied by his wife, about fifteen years ago, during which
period, with the exception of several years spent in Chicago, he has
been a resident of Leon.
The funeral services were conducted at the family residence in north
Leon on last Friday morning at l0 o'clock, Rev. Wm. Biggs officiating,
and interment made in the Leon Cemetery.
