Decatur County Journal
Thursday, September 23, l9l5

MARTHA CATHERINE JORDAN, daughter of WILLIAM
and NANCY JORDAN, was born
January 30, l862, near Decatur City, Iowa,
and died September l2, l9l5,
at her home in Van Wert, Iowa, aged
fifty-three years, seven months and
thirteen days.

Her father died when she was but six months
old and at the age of five
years she moved to Garden Grove with her
mother, where she spent her
childhood and grew to womanhood. The
deceased early developed a
remarkable commercial ability and engaged in
the millinery and
dressmaking business in her teens.

At the age of twenty-three she was united in
marriage to WILLIAM F.
BLAIR, of Van Wert, at which place, MR. and
MRS. BLAIR have since made
their home; to them were born two daughters,
FANNIE ETHEL LAMOREE and
HELEN LOUISE. MRS. BLAIR was an
exceptionally capable partner with her
husband in building up a successful
mercantile business and as a social
entertainer she will never be forgotten for
many a pleasant hour has
been spent by friends at the BLAIR home where
all were alike welcome.

At the age of twelve years, she united with
the Methodist Church at
Garden Grove, but at marriage transferred her
membership to the same
church at Van Wert, where she remained a
faithful member until her
death. Her place in the Aid Society can
never be filled just as she
filled it and she will be greatly missed
there. She was also a member
of the Order of Eastern Star at Weldon.

While the deceased had been a silent sufferer
for many years her
untimely death, which was due to an abdominal
tumor, came as a shock to
the family and friends.

The funeral services were conducted by the
Pastor, Rev. O.W. Morrow,
assisted by Father Seth Samson, at the BLAIR
home on Tuesday, September
l4, and interment made in the Van Wert
Cemetery.
The pall bearers were eight nephews: H.J.
BLAIR, W.P. BLAIR, A.E. BLAIR,
JOHN BLAIR, EDWIN BLAIR, CARDER THROCKMORTON,
A.J. TUTTLE and H.O.
TUTTLE.

She leaves to mourn her departure, a husband,
two daughters and her
mother, MRS. NANCY CARDER, of Van Wert, also
three sisters, MRS. JANE
CLAY, of Decatur; MRS. MINERVA TUTTLE of Van
Wert, and MRS. FANNIE
THROCKMORTON, of Garden Grove, besides a host
of very dear friends.
