JOHN DANIEL GARDNER, son of W.B. and
ELIZABETH (SCHENCK) GARDNER, was
born in Parke County, Indiana, November 5,
l85l, and died in the Leon
Hospital, September 8, l9l5, aged sixty-three
years, ten months and
three days.

He came with his parents to Iowa in the year,
l856, and settled two and
one-half miles north of Leon. His mother
died when he was eleven years
old, from which time he made his home with
his grandparents in Decatur
City. He was united in wedlock to FRANCES
ANN RENNER, January 26,
l876. To this union five children were born,
MRS. NINA V. GRAVES, of
Decatur City; CLARENCE L., of Centerville;
MRS. BESS FISHER, of Leon;
JOHN L., of Ringsted, and FRANCES BERTHA.
His children were all with
him when the end came.

He was buried in the Decatur Cemetery,
September l0th, with the honors
of the Odd Fellows. The funeral was conducted
by Rev. Geo. E. Mitchell,
of Weldon. At an early age he united and was
baptized in the Christian
Church. He was initiated in Decatur Lodge
No. l02 I.O.O.F. February l8,
l888. He always took an active part in Lodge
work and had filled all
the chairs and was Chaplain at the time of
his death. He was also a
member of Decatur Encampment and represented
that branch of the Order in
the Grand Lodge in l9l0-ll-l2.

He left to mourn his death besides his own
family, one sister and two
brothers, REBECCA JANE ELDER, of Topeka,
Kansas; WILSON D., of Culver,
Kansas, and GEO. W., of Decatur City; also
two half-sisters and one
half-brother, MATTIE SILVERS and MINNIE
SHARROW, of Leroy, and BERT
GARDNER, of Sulphur, South Dakota, and two
uncles, SAMUEL SCHENCK, of
Decatur, and TILLMAN H. SCHENCK, of Leon.

The undersigned wish to extend to their many
friends both of Leon and
Decatur City, their heartfelt thanks for the
many beautiful flowers and
other tokens of kindness and sympathy shown
them in this sad hour of
bereavement.
