WM. MARTS, a former resident of Eden
Township, in this county, suicided
by shooting himself, at his claim near
Billings, Montana, on July l9th.
Former neighbors here received word of the
terrible affair a few days
ago and from them we learn some of the
particulars.

MR. MARTS had been married on June 3rd, of
this year, to a woman of that
community, and they had been making their
home on MR. MARTS' claim. A
lady friend of MRS. MARTS had been visiting
them and on July l9th she
left the MARTS home. MR. MARTS made the
remark to his wife that he was
glad she was gone and his wife took offense
at this and a quarrel
ensued. MRS. MARTS claims that MR. MARTS
struck her and then a struggle
took place with the result that she was badly
beaten. She managed to
get away from the house and made her way to
the home of a neighbor, a
quarter of a mile away, fainting three times
on the way. As soon as she
reached the neighbors they called a physician
from Billings, who found
her condition such as to necessitate his
staying in constant attendance
throughout the night.

The next morning the physician went over to
the MARTS home to
investigate the affair and found MR. MARTS
lying upon the floor
weltering in a pool of blood. From what the
papers from there state,
evidently he had shot himself, the ball
entering his left side near the
heart. MR. MARTS was well liked here and his
many old friends in this
county will be sorry to learn of this
unfortunate affair. He had two
daughters living near him in Montana, MRS.
GEO. SMITH and MRS. BISHOP.
MRS. SMITH is the wife of GEORGE SMITH, son
of WM. SMITH, who resides
south of Leon at the present time. Further
particulars are being
awaited by friends here. The Journal will
print further reports of the
tragedy next week.
