Leon, Decatur County, IowaPatsy Ruth Johnston, age 88, of Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of Walter Wesley and Cecil (Reynolds) Cole, was born November 16, 1929, in Ecorse, Michigan. She died at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola, Iowa on Sunday, April 1, 2018.
Patsy grew up near Detroit, Michigan and in Lamoni, Iowa. She graduated from Lamoni High School in 1949. She married Harold Norman Hawley on May 22, 1949. Together they raised their children, Nancy, Judy, Alma, and James. The family lived in both Oregon and Lamoni, Iowa. Patsy and the kids worked for Harold’s family in the berry and bean fields. In 1978, the couple separated.
In the summer of 1979, Patsy married Marvin Albert Johnston. They made their home in Davis City and then on the family farm near Lamoni. Patsy worked many years at O’Bryan Brothers in Leon as a seamstress and later drove the Southern Iowa Trolley.
In her free time, Patsy enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She made beautiful afghans and sweaters and donated many afghans to the Lamoni Nursing and Rehab Center. She was a member of the R.L.D.S. Church in earlier years.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Marvin Johnston; daughter, Nancy Anderson; great granddaughter, Alexandria Hansen; sister, Shirley Rawlins; and brother, Russell Cole.
Survivors include her children, Judith Cole and companion, Dan Schneider, of Lamoni, Alma Hawley of Lamoni, and James Hawley and companion, Tina Harris, of Leon, Iowa; grandchildren, David Hawley and Justin Hawley, both of Frederick, Maryland, Betty & Erik Hansen of Osceola, Iowa, Kymberly Hale and friend, Chris, of Hesperia, California, Ashley & Zach Hazen of Ariel, Washington, great grandchildren, Catherine Hamilton of Vancouver, Washington and Kyliegh Hansen of Osceola; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Memorial Service to be held April 22, 2018, 11:oo a.m., Lamoni Community Center, Lamoni, Iowa. Interment to be made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.
Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni handled arrangements.
