Samuel Eugene Barnes, Sr., age 71, of Leon, Iowa, the son of Charles Clifford and Cleva (James) Barnes, was born December 8, 1946. He died at his home on Monday, February 19, 2018.

Sam grew up in Des Moines, Iowa in a juvenile home after his mother died. In his teen and young adult years, he became a barber, was a police officer and also broke horses in Colorado, killed snakes in the oil fields in Texas, was a truck driver, and a biker. He earned his associate’s degree in construction from Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa. In 1993, he started his own construction business mainly working in southern Iowa while the family lived in Truro, Iowa.

Sam was married to Chris Johnson and blessed with one son, Greg. They later divorced. He met Vicky Louise Dyer, they became a couple in 1972, and married on August 4, 1982. Together they were blessed with four sons, Samuel, Jr., Charles, Matthew, and Lucas. In December of 1996, the family moved to Leon, Iowa. Sam continued to operate his construction business until their son, Matt, became ill. Then Sam started buying and selling flea market items so he and Vicky could stay home with Matt. They took loving care of him for 14 years until his death on September 7, 2011.

Sam loved to ride his motorcycle; he and Vicky had an accident in 2007. It was a long recovery for both, but afterwards, he had his two wheeled bike converted to a trike. He also loved to be with the grandkids. He often bragged about them.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Vicky; sons, Matthew and infant Charlie; brother, Charlie Barnes; sister, Mary Bulman; and daughter-in-law, Cameo Barnes. Survivors include his children, Greg Baird and wife, Kris, of Des Moines, Iowa, Sam, Jr. and wife, Sandra, of Des Moines, Iowa, Lucas and wife, Holly, of Leon; 12 grandchildren, Zach, Justin, Austin, Stacey, Matthew, C.J., Taylor, Juliann, Camron, Lucas, Colton, Marcus, and Charlie; two great grandsons, Ricky and Hudson; stepmother, Shirley Barnes of Des Moines; brother, Dave Barnes of Columbia City, Indiana; sister, Veon Weeks of Des Moines; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services are pending at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa. [Interment was made at Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.]
