Leon, Decatur County, IowaJohn Jacob Ver Steegt, age 88, the son of Cornelius and Jane (Ver Dught) Ver Steegt, was born in Jasper County near Tainter on October 4, 1912. He departed this life on February 3, 2001 on a farm South of Sully. He attended Ritter Country School. He farm with his younger brother, Jim, for awhile before going out on his own. John accepted the Lord as his Savior when he was 22 at a tent meeting in Lynnville, Iowa. He attended seminary in Des Moines for the ministry. He continued farming while he preached in several area churches.
On February 12, 1936, John was united in marriage to Catherine Irene Smith daughter of Fred and Jenny (Barr) Smith. To this union five children were born, Irene, who died at birth.
John never lost his love for preaching and siging. He played guitar and sang at many church meetings. In later years, he enjoyed gardening.
Precededing him in death, were his wife Catherine, baby daughter, his parents; three brothers, Corneluis Johan, Benjamin Garrit and James Adrian; a sister Mary (Ver Steegt) Vander Leest; and two infant sisters.
John is survived by his children and their souses; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, four step, two great, great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; ad other friends.
The service was held at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, with Pastor Dorsey Derrick officiating.
[Interment was made at Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Iowa.]
