Obituary ~ Fern Luvella (Lockey) Young
September 18, 1917 ~ March 19, 2017

Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

Fern Luvella Young, age 99, of Leon, Iowa, the daughter of J. B. and Katherine R. (Vanalstyne) Lockey, was born September 18, 1917, at Spencer, Iowa. She died at Westview Acres in Leon, on Sunday, March 19, 2017.

Fern grew up and attended school in Spencer, Iowa. Her mother died when she was young and was raised by her father and some of her older brothers. At 14 years of age, she began working at a chicken processing plant. Later she attended Cosmetology School and opened her own salon in Des Moines, Iowa. She later sold her business and became a sales representative for the Roux Beauty Hair Care and Hair Color Company. The Roux Company was later merged with Revlon where Fern became a top salesperson during the 18 years of employment. She also traveled throughout her region and was a 'guest stylist' at Cosmetology Shows in major cities when women usually worked at home. After retirement from Revlon, she enjoyed her profession by styling hair at Chariton Nursing Center.

Fern loved to tell how she met the love of her life in the 1960's, Chester Richard Young, while having her car serviced at the Standard Oil Station on Fleur & Grand Avenue, Des Moines. They were later married September 3, 1967, in Bethany, Missouri and lived in Des Moines before purchasing a farm, their dream, in Lucas County, Iowa. In 1995, they sold the farm, livestock, and machinery and retired to Chariton, Iowa. In 2005, they moved to Osceola, Iowa. After Chet's death on October 7, 2013, Fern lived with her niece, Cindy (Young) Kauzlarich, in Leon for a few months before entering a nursing care center.

Fern enjoyed gardening, preserving her 'garden bounty', collecting dolls, and making dresses for the dolls. She also enjoyed embroidering, fishing with Chet, and playing cards and cribbage. Fern's deep faith in her Lord was revealed throughout her life as she took accountability of her actions through compassion, love, sharing, and never wanting to hurt anyone.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Chester Young; and siblings, Jesse Lockey, Edna Rausch, Mary Barth, Georgie Lockey, Burdett Lockey, Clyde Lockey, and Orlo Lockey.

Survivors include a host of nieces and nephews and their families; and other relatives and friends.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. March 29, 2017, Grand River Community Center, Grand River, Iowa due to rain. Interment was made at Grand River Cemetery, Grand River, Iowa.

Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni handled arrangements.
