Obituary ~ Eulah Mae (Evans) Wineland
February 24, 1932 ~ January 18, 2017

Eulah Mae (Evans) Wineland was born to Russell and Mae (Barnett) Evans in LeRoy, Iowa on February 24, 1932. She passed away January 18, 2017, at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 84 years.

Eulah and her parents lived in LeRoy for a year. When she was one year old, they then moved to the old Jim Richman place, which they bought from Elsie Sullivan. Eulah went nine years to the Richman School, including kindergarten, and then went to Leroy High School where she graduated in 1950.

Eulah met Calvin Wineland at a dance in Corydon, Iowa. They dated for a year and at the age of 19, they were married on February 25, 1951. The Leroy Presbyterian minister married them on a rainy day in the living room of Eulah’s parent’s house. The roads were muddy and people had trouble getting there. To this union three children were born: Jerry Lee, Elizabeth Mae, and Calvin Duane.

Eulah and Calvin moved to Grandpa Barnett’s house and farmed. They then moved to Derby and spent not even a year there. They lived on Sif Anderson farm and several other places. They farmed and Calvin ran a dozer and semi-truck.

As a child Eulah joined the LeRoy Presbyterian Church. As an adult she was in the Rebecca Lodge, the Home Service Club, the Triple R Saddle Club, worked at Crestline window factory, was a substitute bus driver, and drove the Southern Iowa Trolley bus in Leon, Iowa. She and Calvin had two vans and would drive the Amish in state and out of state. After Calvin’s death, she continued to drive Minno Beachy’s workers.

Eulah loved to dance to good old country music at round and square dances. She would say, “I would rather dance than eat”. She and Calvin danced far and near. She taught her three children to dance at a very young age. The family would camp at the Iowa State Fair. They would dance to the country music at Pioneer Hall. As the grandchildren came along, they to learned to dance at a very young age.

In 2004, due to clogged arteries in Eulah’s legs, she had to have both legs amputated above the knee. But, her love for dancing never stopped. Her daughter would take her dancing in the wheelchair. She remained very independent. She drove a handicapped van, would fly to Arizona to spend the winter months with her daughter, and lived in her own home until September 2014, when she moved to Arizona to live with her daughter. She had just moved this past July with her daughter into a new home that was handicapped accessible.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Mae Evans; and in 1999, her husband, Calvin Wineland.

Eulah is survived by son, Jerry Wineland of LeRoy, Iowa; daughter, Elizabeth Wineland of Phoenix, Arizona; son, Duane Wineland and wife, Charlene of Lucas, Iowa; five grandchildren: Bill, Sarah, Lucas, Jeremy, and Jennie Wineland; two great grandchildren, Nathan and Jasmine; brother, Russell Dean Evans and wife, Mary of Stover, Missouri; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Slade O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa, at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 26, 2017, with Rev. Alice Bolon officiating. Burial will be in Humeston Cemetery in Humeston, Iowa.
