The Last Mile To Heaven

Charles Arthur Pearcy, age 73, was born October 20, 1943, at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa, to James Harold and Ina Faye (LaFollette) Pearcy. He died on Friday, February 10, 2017, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Charles graduated the eighth grade from Weldon School, from Osceola High School in 1961, and Northwest Missouri State College in 1966. He served in the United States Army from May 1967, until 1969, during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Germany as a nuclear weapons maintenance specialist. Upon his discharge, Charles worked for an insurance company in Des Moines, Iowa. He later returned to Weldon and purchased the family grocery and hardware store. He operated the business and also developed and operated Country Wholesale in which he delivered goods to family type grocery stores in the area for twenty years.

Charles was married to Sherry Simmerman for a short time, from May 3, 1975, until September 28, 1976. Charles owned horses for several years including draft horses. He played his first guitar at age 31, and learned how to play many other musical instruments, including bass, lap steel, fiddle, and trumpet. In his free time he loved playing music and playing pool with his friend, Max Carmichael. In the 1980’s Charles and his nephew, Daniel, coached Little League in Weldon and Van Wert for several years.

He made this most important statement about his life, “I never started living until 2005.” He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and became a born again Christian on March 6, 2005. He was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Leon. God touched Charles through the minister's message at Dick Baker's funeral. Charles loves Jesus Christ!

Survivors include his sister, Kathryn Mason of Weldon, Iowa; sister-in-law, Vallie Pearcy of Osceola, Iowa; nephews, Daniel Pearcy of Osceola, and Brent Mason and wife, Sarah, and their children, MaKenna Ann and Zavier Charles, all of Clinton, Missouri; and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold Jay Pearcy and infant, Larry James Pearcy; and nephew, Jimmy Pearcy.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017, with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Burial will be in the Green Bay Cemetery in Clarke County, Iowa at a later date.
