Ivan Gail McCullough, born February 25, 1931 in Garden Grove, IA, was the son of William “Guy” & Maude Hill McCullough. He passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Legacy Lodge in Chariton, IA at the age of 84 years.

Ivan married Eleaine Evelyn Johnson of Leon, IA in 1950. They were parents of eight children: Arnan Gail, Allan Lynn, Calvin Lee, Jennine Kay, Kevin Guy, Galen Lyle, Maureen “Mo” Rose and Coleen Lois.

Ivan and Eleaine moved to Russell, IA, in 1954 where Ivan worked for Russell Produce Company. In 1964, they purchased an insurance agency from Walter and Mona Coop and together they operated McCullough Insurance Agency until it was sold in 1985. Ivan began his United States Postal Service career in 1965. He carried mail on a Russell rural route for 35 years, retiring in 2001.

While a Russell resident Ivan served terms as a city councilman and as mayor. He served as chairman of the of the Rathbun Regional Planning Commission, participating in the 1971 dedication of Rathbun Lake with Richard Nixon being the keynote speaker. In 1973 he was named the Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year for Lucas County. Ivan was a member of the Russell Faith United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Russell Lion’s Club.

Ivan acquired a couple of donkeys after he moved to Russell and began a long-time hobby of raising mules. He broke and sold many riding and jumping mules. After retirement from carrying mail, Ivan bought a van to haul several of his Amish friends to and from their work sites and appointments.

Preceding Ivan in death were sons Allan McCullough and Calvin McCullough, parents Guy and Maude McCullough, sisters and brothers-in-law Emily Eileen (Gerald) Smith, Lois Maude (Leroy) Orfield and Freda Gieula (George) Morgan; and brother-in-law Kenneth Herron.

Surviving are children, Arnan (Joanie) McCullough of Russell, Jennine (Steve) Rex of Enumclaw, WA, Kevin (Cindi) McCullough of Russell, Galen (Pam) McCullough of Chariton, Mo White of Chariton, Coleen (Steve Coffey) McCullough of Oskaloosa, IA and daughters-in-law Lois Jeffries of Russell and Leah McCullough of Hayden, ID.

Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren: Kimberly (Dylan) Erhart of Steamboat Springs, CO, Adam McCullough of Fort Collins, CO, Morgan McCullough of Chicago, Il, Megan (Mike) Arnold of Russell, Danielle (Travis) Miller of Rathdrum, ID, Michelle McCullough of Roundup, MT, Alissa McCullough of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Dan (Dea) Jacob of Eugene, OR, Kurt (Toni) McCullough of Chariton, Cody McCullough of Russell, Jeff McCullough of Grimes, IA, Emily McCullough of West Des Moines, IA, Brett White of Chariton and Tori White of Chariton; fourteen great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law LaNelle Herron of Chariton.

Memorials may be made to Homestead of Chariton, the assisted living center at which Ivan spent his last six months, or a charity of your choice.

Memorial services were conducted at Fielding Funeral Home, Chariton on May 14, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Interment was made at Garden Grove Cemetery, Garden Grove, Iowa. Fielding Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
