Death of Mrs. Mary A. Hawk

Mary Araminta Campbell, daughter of Asa D. and Nancy Campbell was born near Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio, August 9, 1835. On April 2, 1853, she was united in marriage to Jacob Hawk, by Rev. Peter Hountstein of the M.E. church in Crawford Co Ohio. To this union were born six children as follows: Lizzie M., Charley O., Fred W., Frank J., J. Watson and Candace E., all of them still living except Charley who died when about five years old.

In 1869, Mrs. Hawk moved with her husband and family to a farm in Mercer Co, MO., about one mile southwest of Pleasanton, Iowa where they resided some years when they sold the farm and moved to Albany, MO, where Mr. Hawk, who was a contractor and builder, resided some years. From Albany they moved to Bethany, MO., where he followed his business for sometime. From there they moved to Leon, Iowa, and after a residence there of a few years they went to Des Moines where Mr. Hawk had some large contracts. After about two years they returned to Leon where they continued to reside and where Mr. Hawk died on May 12, 1897.

Mrs. Hawk continued to live in Leon until about three years ago, when on account of ill health and feebleness, she sold her home and since that time has been making her home with different ones of her children. The last two winters she stayed in Iowa she spent her time with her youngest daughter, Mrs. C.E. Ricks, in Davis City, but she thought the rigorous winters here too severe for her and about one year ago she went to Oklahoma City and has been making her home with her sons, Frank J. and J. Watson. She had been a great sufferer from a complication of diseases for many years but she bore her suffering with great patience, saying she believed it to be the Lord's will.

Mrs. Hawk was converted before she was 15 years of age, when she united with the United Brethren church, the meeting at which she was converted being held by that denomination. She continued in this church until she moved to a location where there were none of this denomination and she then united with M.E. church and lived a faithful and devoted Christian until God signed her release and took her home to glory. The last conversation the writer had with her in reference to her salvation she said that many years ago she had made peace with her Heavenly Father and was only waiting for his call to come home and be at rest. She always had kindly words of advice or encouragement for all with whom she came in contact and was always very solicitous for the welfare not only of her relatives but her friends as well.

She died at the home of her son, Frank J. in Oklahoma City, Wednesday evening, October 21, 1908, aged 73 years, two months and twelve days. The funeral was held at Davis City Saturdy afternoon, October 24, 1908 at 1 o'clock, interment made in the Leon cemetery following, conducted by the writer.
