Samuel Adolphus Gates passed away February 27, 1931 at Leon. He was born in Athens County, Ohio February 25, 1850. He was the son of Samuel H Gates and Charlotte Lorey both of Ohio. He moved with his parents to Decatur county where he grew to manhood.

Nov 1, 1877 he was united in marrage to Emma J. Springer who died May 17, 1891. To this marriage were born four children; Mary A., who departed this life June 14, 1930, Walter and Olive who died in infancy and Grace who survies her father.

On July 24, 1894 he was married to Mrs. Lenna Florence Huston, nee Alexander, who died on August 1 1923. Two children were born to this union, Rev. John A. Gates of South Bend Indiana and Mrs. Florence Estella Henderson of St Louis Missouri.

Mr. Gates, when a young man read law and was admitted to the bar of Leon where he served as an able and efficient attorney for many years, practicing in Decatur county and other parts of Iowa and Missouri, enjoying the esteem and large friendnship of his associates of the bar. For many years he served the city of Leon as Mayor. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Funeral services were held held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church and burial followed in the Leon Cemetery.
