Steven Dewayne Stanford, age 64, of Leon, Iowa, the son of Willis Dewayne and Treva Mae (Adair) Stanford, was born July 8, 1952, in Long Beach, California. He died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday, October 9, 2016, following a horse accident the week before.

Steve grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and attended school there, graduating from East High School in 1971. On February 12, 1972, he married Roberta Marie Crawford in Lamoni, Iowa. The couple started out their marriage living in Des Moines. They moved to Leon in 1973. Their son, Jamie, was born in 1981. Steve was Jamie’s biggest fan all during his high school and college years. They traveled to watch him participate in all his activities.

Over the years, Steve worked construction, for the Leon sale barn, Crestline Windows, cleaning and being a courier for Great Western Bank in Leon, and was currently farming. In his free time, Steve loved to fish, hunt, ride horses, and read western novels and magazines. Earlier he and Roberta were members of the Decatur County Saddle Club. They both enjoyed trail riding and camping, which they were doing at the time of the accident.

Preceding him in death were his dad, Willis Stanford; sister, Carolyn Beck; and parents-in-law, Dale and Shirley Crawford.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Stanford of Leon; son, Jamie Stanford and wife Krystal of Bondurant, Iowa; granddaughter, Lakyn Stanford of Bondurant; mother, Treva Stanford of Des Moines, Iowa; siblings, Dave & Lynda Stanford of Indianola, Iowa, Janet & Steve Clark, Janice Stanford, and Lisa & Dave Poling, all of Des Moines, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Kenny Beck of Des Moines; Roberta’s siblings, Darrell & Chris Crawford of Finksburg, Maryland and Karen & Don Collins of Leon; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 13, 2016, with Rev. Terry D. Roberts officiating.
