David Andrew Payne, age 48, of Lamoni, Iowa, the son of Samuel Curtis and Judy Lee (Pryor) Payne, was born October 4, 1967, in Santa Clara, California. He left this life on September 30, 2016, from his Lamoni home.

David graduated from Lamoni High School in 1985. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman. He attended Basic and Advanced Training at Fort Benning, Georgia in August 1985. David’s Military Career spanned 20 years with assignments at Fort Riley, Kansas, Erlangen, Germany, Fort Hood, Texas and Camp Hovey, Korea. He is a Combat Veteran of Operation Desert Storm. David’s Military Education included the Basic and Senior Leadership Courses, Bradley Master Gunner Course and The Bradley Crew Evaluator Course.

David earned many decorations to include the Expert and Combat Infantry Badges, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, German Marksmanship Badge (Schutzenschnur), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Liberation of Kuwait Medal and Korea Defense Service Medal. Perhaps, David’s most profound achievement was his ability to lead. His loyalty, respect, and genuine concern for his peers and Soldiers earned him Brothers for Life.

David spent the past eight years with the love of his life, Kelly Lynn Stevenson. They have known each other since elementary school and were married June 15, 2013. They always spent as much time together as was possible. David also enjoyed hunting, watching movies, landscaping, and his “babies”, dogs, Brennus, Truman, and Blossom. David had a wild sense of humor, obvious in his cat’s name, Mouse.

David was a member of the Community of Christ church.

Preceding him in death were his grandmother, Lulu Alta Young and step grandfather, Jerry Nolan Young. Survivors include his wife, Kelly Payne of Lamoni, Iowa; his children, Amber Looney of Waco, Texas, Chelsey & Blake Trester of Pflugerville, Texas, and Andrew Payne of Waco; grandson, Judge Looney of Waco; mother, Judy Payne of Lamoni; brothers, Jeffrey and Catalina Payne of San Jose, California and Gregory Payne of Houston, Texas; aunts and uncles, Jerri and William Wright of New Haven, Missouri and Raymond and Sandy Young of Yuba City, California; and other relatives and friends.
