Gerald Duane Parmer, age 72, of Pleasanton, Iowa, the son of Otis James and Erma Adelle (Glendenning) Parmer, was born April 30, 1944, near Weldon, Iowa. He died at his home on Saturday, November 5, 2016.

Gerald attended elementary school in Des Moines, Iowa. The family then moved to Decatur County, Iowa and he attended Van Wert School. He started out farming with his dad and continued farmed the rest of his life in addition to working other jobs. He did caterpillar work building interstate 35 between Osceola and the Iowa-Missouri state line. He worked as an iron worker for Local 67 in Des Moines before opening Parmer Construction, where he did woodwork, shingling, and concrete work. In the mid 1990’s he started mowing and doing snow removal for the elderly.

He was married to Vicky Belle Chamberlain on February 1, 1962, in Missouri. They were blessed with four children, Julie, Dwayne, Shane, and Blaine. They divorced in 1998.

In his free time, Gerald enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding and caring for his animals. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Dwayne Parmer; granddaughter, Breanna Parmer; and son-in-law, Dick Furman.

He is survived by his children, Julie Furman and friend, David Wacome, of Osceola, Iowa, Shane and Tina Parmer of Pleasanton, Iowa, and Blaine and Norma Parmer of New Virginia, Iowa; grandchildren, Chanse, Reece, Rachel, Kristen, Jessica, Katelynn, Jesse, Jaxsi, Jayci, Jeryn, Jozie, Renae, Samantha, and Hunter; great grandchildren, Dallas, Quinten, Eian, William, Justin, and Liam; companion, Patricia “Pat” Creveling; siblings, Evelyn Patterson of Buffalo, Missouri, Donnie Parmer and Cindy of Woodburn, Iowa, and Wanda Voll and David of DeSoto, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2016, with Pastor Steve Eastman officiating. Burial will be in the Van Wert Cemetery, Van Wert, Iowa. After the hearse ride to Van Wert, two of Gerald's favorite mules and a wagon driven by his nephew, John Parmer, will take him to his final resting place in the cemetery.
