Decatur County Journal
January l4, l9l5

The public was greatly surprised at the
sudden illness of MRS. JENNIE
HOLLAND and then at her death last Sunday
morning. Having lived here so
long she had a large circle of friends. She
was born in Rockbridge
County, Virginia, November 8, l849, and was
thus 65 years, l month and
26 days of age. She moved with her parents
to Delaware, O., in l852.
They lived there until l869 when they came to
Iowa and located at
Smyrna. She and DR. J.W. HOLLAND were
married December l, l870. They
came to Osceola in l876 where she has since
resided. She became a
member of the M.E. Church in l865 and has
been known as one of the
faithful and useful members. She was also
one of the charter members of
the W.R.C.

She was quiet and unassuming and could always
be depended upon. She was
a good Christian, a reliable citizen, an
obliging neighbor and an
affectionate mother.

There were six children, four of whom died in
infancy. CHARLES C.
HOLLAND resides in Chicago and JOSEPHINE in
Osceola.

Her sister, MRS. MARY CURRY, lives at
Eagleville, Mo. Her brothers are:
H.P. SHAFER, Hiawatha, Kan.; SAMUEL,
Hayfield, Pa.; CHARLES, Riverside,
Calif.; JOHN W., Sabetha, Kan.

The following quotation was found in a paper
where she had recently
copied it: "When one had a friend and found
that friend had just
stepped out of sight, and is waiting to meet
one again in the sweet bye
and bye, it cannot make the household
anything but happy to talk of them
sometimes." She had often thought of the
loved ones who had "just
stepped out of sight" and now she is happy in
their company.
