Decatur County Journal
December 24, l9l4

JAMES Z. MCALISTER was born in South Boston,
Ind., June l4, l843, and
died at his home in Weldon, Decatur County,
Iowa at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday,
December l5, l9l4, aged 71 years, 6 months
and 1 day. He is survived by
a wife, two daughters and three sons and one
brother, all of whom were
present at the funeral.

When a boy eight years old, he emigrated west
with his parents to Clarke
County, Iowa, where he resided until the
beginning of the Civil War,
when he enlisted in the 39th Regiment, Iowa
Inf. Vol., August 9, l862.
He served two years, nine months and two days
in the Union Army, after
which he received an honorable discharge,
Washington D.C., June 5, l865.

In l866, he crossed the plains to Nevada
returning to Iowa in l869.
On December 23, l875 he was married to MISS
CATHERINE JAMISON and to
this union three children were born, namely,
ROY, MONT and HARVEY. His
wife died in l88l. He again went west in
l883 where he lived in Oregon
until l885 when he returned to Iowa. On
April 2l he was again united in
marriage to SARAH A. GODBY and to this union
two daughters were born,
namely, MABEL and NELLIE.

In January, l894, he decided to begin a
Christian life and hence united
with the Friends Church near Smyrna of which
he remained a member until
death. MR. MCALISTER was a pioneer of this
county, coming here in
l85l. He grew up with the country and had to
do with the development of
this country as we see it today.

He was industrious and succeeded in making
for himself and family a nice
home and a fine farm. He was loyal to his
country, doing valiant
service for it in the 39th regiment Iowa
Inft. Vol. He lived to see the
fruits of his service in the greater
development of the county. He was
a strong temperance man. For several years
he was a member of the
Sunday School Class taught by the writer and
was much interested in the
discussions of the lessons from Sabbath to
Sabbath. He will be missed
in the church and Sunday School, in our
memorial services as he was a
member of our martial band and assisted
greatly in all its services. He
was a good Christian man, a good citizen and
a lover of his family and
home and a loving husband and an affectionate
father.

The funeral services were conducted December
l8 at l o'clock at the M.E.
Church by the writer, an old time friend,
assisted by Rev. Cunningham,
in the presence of a large and sympathizing
audience. The choir sang
very appropriate songs. Beautiful flowers
were in abundance. Members
of the Post assisted by the following
comrades from abroad: J.H. WADE
and C.H. NEAL, of Osceola; J.H. EVANS and MR.
GRANDSTAFF, of Leon. A.W.
MITCHELL, of Derby, acted as honorary pall
bearers from the residence to
the church. The interment was at the Metier
Cemetery.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out
to the bereaved family and
all the relatives.

--GEORGE E.
MITCHELL.
