Decatur County Journal
November 26, l9l4

One of the most terrible and heartrending
accidents that ever took place
in Lineville occurred on Tuesday afternoon
(sic) about l0 o'clock at the
home of B.E. WEST on West Line Street when
the clothing of MR. WEST's
aged mother, MRS. LUCINDA BUTCHER, caught
fire, presumably from her
pipe, and before assistance reached her, the
entire clothing was
consumed and her body burned to a crisp. She
was seated in her chair in
her room on the second floor of the house
where her son had left her but
a few moments before to bring wood to
replenish the fire. MRS. WEST was
in the yard outside the house, her mother,
MRS. TADLOCK, coming in, MR.
WEST stopped a moment to talk with her before
proceeding upstairs with
the wood.
As he opened the door he was met by smoke and
flames from the upper
room. He is totally blind, but immediately
gave the alarm and hurried
upstairs to the assistance of his aged
mother. The others also lost no
time in reaching the room where a most
terrible scene met their gaze.
The old lady was still reclining in the chair
with every particle of
clothing burned from her body and she was
already dead, the weak and
fleeting spark of her life having apparantly
left her with the first
shock and pain of the fire. The carpet, rugs
and the chair in which she
was seated were all aflame, but the fire was
soon extinguished. No
alarm or outcry had been heard by those below
and the aged woman was so
weak and enfeebled as to be unable to make
any resistance to the cruel
flames.

MRS. BUTCHER had been a resident of
Linesville for more than forty years
and a widow for about thirty-five years,
living most of that time with
her son, B.E. WEST, most of whose entire time
during the past year or
two has been devoted to her care and comfort.

The funeral was held yesterday from her late
home, services being
conducted by Rev. A. McKee, of the M.E.
Church, South, assisted by Rev.
C.K. Corkill, Pastor of the M.E. Church and
the interment followed at
the South Lineville Cemetery.

TRIBUNE.
