Decatur County Journal
December 5, l9l8

The following is a sketch of the life of one
of the grand old men of
Methodism.

SETH SAMSON was born in Switzerland County,
Indiana, on April l2, l825.
He was married to MARGARET J. WILSON on Nov.
22, l848. To them were
born ten children, two of whom died in early
infancy prior to l855. The
others grew to manhood and womanhood and
still survive. They are E.D.
SAMSON, of Des Moines, Iowa; G.W. SAMSON, of
Cedar Falls, Iowa; MARY T.
THOMPSON, wife of Rev. W.B. THOMPSON, living
near Weldon, Iowa; J.F.
SAMSON, of Indianola, Iowa; AVARILLA C.
ARNETT, wife of J.W. ARNETT, of
Baldwin, Kansas; CARRIE J. SUNDER, wife of
DONALD SUNDER, of
Haveli-Kyargpur, India; FRANK L. SAMSON,
living near Ottawa, Kansas; and
CHAS. M. SAMSON, of Carrollton, Illinois.

He died at the home of MR. and MRS. W.B.
THOMPSON on Nov. 24, l9l8, at
3:20 a.m. He removed from Indiana to Van
Buren County, Iowa, in
February l853, to Wapello County, Iowa, early
in l854, and to Decatur
County, near the present town of Van Wert on
November 27, l863, exactly
55 years prior to this, the date of his
funeral.

His wife died May 7, l889, and in September,
l890, he married to MRS.
MARY E. BREWER, whose death occurred in l904.
After that time he
resided chiefly in the homes of his children.

In l86l he enlisted as a volunteer in the war
for the Union, and was a
member of Co. F. 7th Iowa Infantry, formed at
Ottumwa, near which place
he resided at the time.

He was converted at the age of thirteen, and
joined the Methodist
Episcopal Church of which he continued a
member. Promptly upon his
arrival in Decatur County, he connected
himself with our society here,
where he held his church membership until his
death. For about
forty-eight years he held the relation of
local preacher, being much of
the time a local elder and occasionally
serving as a pastorial supply.
He was, sometimes when the District
Superintendent could not be present,
designated by the latter to preside at the
quarterly conference. A
great number of marriages solemnized, and
funeral services conducted by
him attest the hold his kindly generous
spirit and upright life won for
him throughout a wide range of acquaintance.

The funeral service was held at the M.E.
Church in Van Wert, Iowa, in
charge of Rev. W.A. Weyraugh and assisted by
Rev. W.H. Larrick of
Weldon.
